AI in Regulated Industries: Why Constraints Lead to Better Engineering

"Move fast and break things" works great, until you're dealing with protected health information, financial records, or personally identifiable data. In regulated industries, breaking things isn't a learning opportunity. It's a compliance violation, a breach notification, or a lawsuit.

I've spent the last few years building AI systems in exactly these environments: BalancingIQ handles financial data for small businesses, and SOA Assist Pro automates Medicare compliance workflows. Both operate under strict regulatory frameworks, financial regulations for one, HIPAA for the other.

Deterministic workflows and auditability force you to write clear, explicit, well-documented code. No clever tricks. No hidden state. No "it works on my machine." Six months later, when you need to debug or audit, you'll thank yourself.

3. You Build Trust by Default

When you design for transparency (showing users what data you use, what the AI suggested, what got approved) people trust your system. Trust is the hardest thing to build and the easiest to lose. Regulated industries force you to earn it from day one.

4. You Ship Systems That Actually Scale
